Louis Byrne Slichter: Builder of the Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics
Clarence E. Palmer · Journal of Geophysical Research Atmospheres · 1963
On the occasion of Louis Sliehter's retirement from his post as Professor of Geophysics in the University of California, we honor him by the research papers appearing in the following pages of this issue. These papers have been written by friends who work in fields most closely related to his special interests, and the subjects treated illustrate the wide range of his scientific work. But Louis Slichter is not solely a great geophysicist. His work in the National Academy of Sciences, of which he has been a member since 1944 and Chairman of the Section of Geophysics since 1960, and his active promotion of the science in the American Geophysical Union, have made him a national and international leader and public servant.
