he project Communication Assistance to Negate Disabilities in Youth (CANDY) comprises computer scientists, electrical engineers, speech pathologists, pediatricians, and occupational therapists.Our 10-year goal is to create a speech synthesizer for disabled individuals.We are currently in our third year of the project and have produced a set of interim results in both our speech synthesizer and gesture-based input.Our initial target population is children with cerebral palsy (CP), of whom there are approximately 400,000 in the United States alone [6].When adults are included in the count, the number of Americans affected ..... .......... .
