Six Common Myths About the Simple Network Management Protocol
David Kaufman · EDPACS · 1998
Essentially, the simple network management protocol (SNMP) is a collection of command and query instructions that can be used to inspect and reconfigure the performance characteristics of such local area and wide area network-connected devices as routers, filters, bridges, and repeaters. SNMP collects data from variables that are defined by logic in management information bases (MIBs). These variables reside physically, in turn, as counters or as rudimentary tables in software agents that are located in the devices that are being observed and controlled.
