Stereo matching algorithm for curved objects based on isodensity lines and a new method for interval corresponding estimation
Hideyuki Suzuki, Osamu Nakamura · Systems and Computers in Japan · 1999
In the stereo method, it is a very important issue to determine precisely the correspondence between two images since it directly affects the accuracy of measurement. This article proposes a new matching algorithm, where the corresponding points are determined by matching based on isodensity lines and four candidate corresponding point extraction algorithms for the corresponding points and the points between the corresponding points. The effectiveness of the method is demonstrated by an experiment. The proposed method is divided into (1) a matching algorithm based on the isodensity lines and (2) an interval correspondence algorithm. The corresponding points are extracted roughly by matching (1), and detailed matching processing is applied to the pixels between the corresponding points in processing (2). In an experiment using the head of a mannequin, a highly precise match is obtained even for a smooth curved surface such as the forehead, which has been difficult to handle by the conventional method. In other words, the proposed method is shown to be useful. ©1999 Scripta Technica, Syst Comm Jpn, 30(10): 41–56, 1999
