Using the Fortran 90 DO WHILE

Edward Reid · ACM SIGPLAN Fortran Forum · 1993

The development of the Fortran 90 standard included several flip-flops on the question of whether to include a DO WHILE construct --- that is, a loop statement whose termination is based on a logical condition rather than being controlled by a stepped variable. First DO WHILE was included based on the opinions of programmers who were accustomed to the availability of similar constructs in other languages. Later, as part of a move to trim down what some perceived as an overly large language, DO WHILE was dropped. In the final iteration, the original arguments prevailed, and DO WHILE became part of the standard.
