On the least-squares plane through a set of points

Walter Clark. Hamilton · Acta Crystallographica · 1961

A recent discussion by Schomaker et al., of the eigenvalue equation determining the best least squares plane through a set of points is extended. A nondiagonal weight matrix is introduced, the errors associated with the coefficients of the plane are discussed, a criterion for the rejection of a given set as coplanar is given, and a more general form of the equations, valid for the case where centain restrictions are placed on the plane, is presented.
