Response of a Helical Coil to a Step Impact Load

Daniel W. Haines, Nagyoung Chang · The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America · 1973

A theoretical solution is presented of a one-turn elastic helical coil of small pitch with one end fixed and subjected to a step impact load applied tangentially to the other end. Previously derived one-dimensional equations [Paper H8, 83rd Meeting of the Acoust. Soc. Amer.] are taken as the governing equations of motion. The Mindlin-Goodman method is applied to solve these equations with the boundary conditions as indicated. The solution demonstrates the effectiveness of the coil as an impact absorber.
