The 1/N backup policy is the following data maintenance technique. In the secondary memory medium, such as a floppy disk or an MO disk, the memory capacity is divided equally into N parts. When 1/N of the memory capacity is used up, a redundant backup is applied from that memory medium to another memory medium. This paper discusses the optimal 1/N backup policy, which is different from the conventional policy, under alternative cost criteria. Using the expected cost ratios in the infinite and the finite planning periods as the evaluation criteria, it is shown that a backup schedule can be generated under more practical evaluation criteria than in the conventional approach. © 2000 Scripta Technica, Electron Comm Jpn Pt 3, 84(2): 56–64, 2001
