A COMPUTATIONAL SIMPLE MODEL TO REPRESENT AND MANIPULATE LINGUISTIC IMPRECISION

Marialuisa N. McAllister · International Journal of General Systems · 1990

During recent years much research has been published with the aim of creating a reasonable way to represent attributes and to manipulate attributes. In this context, by attributes we mean linguistic expressions which consist of a term (selected from a finite set of possible choices) which may be paired to an optional modifier (which may also be selected from a finite set of possible choices) including the negations of these pairs. If the representation of attributes is interesting, the problem of representing the fact that different individuals often have different understandings of the same attribute is an awesome challenge. This paper develops a mathematical model to represent and to manipulate linguistic imprecision, via an interval-based approach. This approach is important because the resulting computational techniques are quite simple. Their execution creates (i) the representation of the attributes including negations, and (ii) the comparison and composition of several different sets of attributes and their negations.
