Resolving the conflicting nature of production objectives is the primary task of production system design. Typical production objectives are (i) maximum profit, (ii) minimal production time, and (iii) maximum throughput. In this paper, multiobjective optimization is used to resolve these conflicting objectives in a computational setting. The research presented herein uses a new optimization-based decision-making framework to select optimal production system concepts during conceptual design. The decision-making approach presented in this paper is based on the newly developed notion of s-Pareto frontier .A n s-Pareto frontier comprises Pareto optimal solutions that originate from the Pareto frontiers of various production system concepts. Design solutions comprising the s-Pareto frontier are Pareto optimal with respect to the set of all candidate solutions from all production system concepts. The s-Pareto frontier is particularly useful as a decision-making tool because it can be used to characterize the tradeoffs between proposed production system concepts as well as the tradeoffs between conflicting objectives.
