The inclusion of fingerprint biometric authentication in Apple's latest iPhone is an important step in bringing biometrics to the mainstream. Prior to this, most people's understanding of biometrics would have been limited to police or forensics references – identifying fingerprints against criminal records, or the facial recognition booths for biometric-enabled passports at UK Border Control where the passport holder's facial image is compared to the data stored on the chip within the passport.
