Abstract In the information communication system it is necessary to establish the protocol conversion, network connection and media conversion techniques to realize communications among computers and terminals with different communication protocols. This paper considers the hierarchical protocol defined based on the OSI basic reference model, and discusses the protocol conversion method together with its realization. A versatile method is introduced in the proposed hierarchical protocol conversion system, in which a protocol conversion can be made from PAD function for various terminals as well as from the nonprocedural level to the personal computer communication protocol recommended by the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications. The protocol conversion equipment developed based on the proposed idea is demonstrated, and its usefulness is indicated.
