Missed deadlines and unsatisfactory first release systems continue to plague software developers after more than 20 years of experience. Increased availability of trained staff and the advent of adequate generative systems to produce known software items like language processors, etc., automatically have not, apparently, contributed to solving the problem. The orientation of this paper is that software planning remains an unknown skill for technical/administration groups. It points out three common errors in the way planning is generally carried out and relates planning failures to these fundamental errors.
