Abstract In this paper we propose the fast edge/detail preserving fuzzy interpolation algorithm and its extended algorithm for enlazging the gray-scale level and color digital images, respectively. The proposed algorithms estimate urdmown pixel values in the enlarged image by using fuzzy inference based on linear extrapolation of the pixels neighboring to the pixel to be estimated, and obtain the enlarged digital image preserving sharp edges, peaks and monotonic slopes accurately. The validity and the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms aze verified by applying them to the enlargement of the actual digital images. The experimental results show that the performances of the proposed algorithms are superior to other typical image enlargement algorithms. Furthermore, the processing time is reduced drastically in compazison with other algorithms which realize the image enlazgement with almost same accuracy to the proposed algorithms.
