Study of the Comparative Spectra of the Tones Produced by Pipe and Electronic Organs

Charles A. Culver · The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America · 1960

Although it is recognized that the acoustical environment has an important bearing on the sound spectrum of any musical instrument as heard by a listener, it has seemed to be worthwhile to make a study of the tone color of certain basic organ stops of several electronic organs when compared with the corresponding voices of several conventional pipe organs. So far as possible the two types of instruments were studied under similar environmental conditions. The harmonic content of two tones in the middle register of each instrument was determined by means of the author's wave analyzer and the resulting data graphically presented. The characteristics of the various spectra are discussed.
