Migration by multiscale edge detection

The structure in the earth's subsurface is primarily determined by the strong changes in the medium parameters. For example strong changes can denote a fault or can delineate a reservoir. Migration as a part of exploration seismology aims at imaging the strong changes or boundaries. On the other hand, once an image of the subsurface is available it is in principle easy to extract the boundaries with the help of an edge detection algorithm. Hence, the extraction of edges is exactly the aim that migration and edge detection employed in computer vision and image analysis have in common. Edge detection can serve as a guide for an efficient migration in the sense that the migration has to be aimed at the boundaries observed by the edge detection algorithm.
