THE CONCEPT AND APPLICATION OF SKELETON MODELS IN FARM BUSINESS ANALYSIS AND PLANNING
Malcolm Blackie, J. B. Dent · Journal of Agricultural Economics · 1974
The systems approach to research has led to an upsurge of interest in modelling as a means of integrating data from different disciplines. In common with many models, those developed for management purposes have been related to current research requirements. This paper describes a ‘skeleton’ model which, while retaining value in research, can be linked with a complete information system and thereby provide a practical management tool for the individual farmer. Validation of simulation models has been a major hurdle to their application but the nature of skeleton models permits a more objective and straightforward assessment. To illustrate this approach a skeleton model for pig producers is described together with the associated validation procedures.
