Aaron Marcus · Communications of the ACM · 1993

UBS rainthe coming decades, not only workstations, but "playstations,' appliances, in fact, most industrial products are likely to contain embedded microprocessors. These products will offer users complex data and functions available through networked computer systems communicating with one another as well as with human beings. To enable users to take advantage of these advanced products, product developers will need to provide more sophisticated UIs that achieve effective communication of increasingly complex information through new technologies, techniques, and tools.Viewed from this perspective [19], the developer must achieve effective communication of the following elements of a UI" Afetaphot~: Fundamental terms, images, and concepts that are easily recognized, understood, and remembered.Afe#ta/Bode/: Appropriate organization and representation of data, functions, work tasks/play activities, and roles.#avigation of Bode/: Movement among data, functions, tasks/activities, and roles depicted in the model that provide speedy access and facilitate comprehension.
