Within- and between-modality correlation detection
Irwin W. Pollack · The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America · 1974
You are given two information finite-state sources. Your task is to determine the correlation between the sources by sensory processing alone. Should you present the sources to the ears, to the eyes, or to the skin, or should you present one source to one modality and the other to another modality? Answer: within-modality comparisons can be accomplished at high presentation rates where the display can be appreciated in terms of overall properties (“perceptualization”); by contrast, between-modality comparisons can be accomplished only at slow presentation rates where individual events must be processed.
