New Look in Speech Analysis

J. Ryland Mundie, Thomas J. Moore · The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America · 1969

An electronic model of inner ear function has been employed in the generation of displays of the basilar membrane response to speech inputs. These displays depict displacement as a function of time at 24 locations along the length of the basilar membrane. A very fast (3-megasample/sec), 32-channel multiplexer is utilized to present a quasi-three-dimensional display of this surface on a CRT. This technique shows details in the temporal-spatial surface produced by a speech sound that are not evident in other displays of speech analysis by analog cochlea or more conventional spectrographic techniques. It was found that distinctive features in these surfaces could be used to identify speech sounds reliably.
