Digital FIR filtering with residue number system

The residue number system (RNS) is a modular arithmetic, where no interdigit carries are involved in the addition or multiplication of two numbers. Significant improvements in speed can be achieved in digital filter implementations by incorporating the RNS arithmetic. In this paper, we present the design of finite impulse response (FIR) digital filters using RNS arithmetic on microprocessors. A three moduli processor using four 8-bit general purpose microprocessors has been designed and fabricated. Results of a linear phase FIR filter implemented on this processor are also included.
