This case study charts the course of the attempts to introduce electronic mail into a large public sector organization. It outlines the main facets and findings of a usability audit. It discusses and interprets the main messages from the evaluation, and offers a number of personal and organizaton factors other than the strict findings of an ergonomic audit that will influence the take-up of a major software application in a real-life setting.
