Automated Cartography Data Formats and Graphics: The ETL Experience

Homer C. Babcock · The American Cartographer · 1978

Data formats used in automated cartographic processing include both those for linear data (strings of X,Y coordinates) and those for raster data (information in arrays of predefined cells). Hardware and handling techniques differ for each and mixed mode experimentation is being conducted in an effort to combine the advantages of each. Handling of terrain data is a particular challenge due to large amounts of data; developments in software and hardware, with particular attention to formats, are improving the performance of automation in this area.
