Statistical analysis of the galaxy distribution in a diameter-limited sample in the northern sky

In order to understand if the differences between the Southern Sky Redshift Survey (which is diameter-limited) and the CfA survey (which is magnitude-limited) are induced by the different selection critera, the CfA survey has been directly compared with a diameter-limited sample covering the same region of the sky (UDLS, Bardelli et al.). We analyse the statistical properties of the CfA and the UDLS catalogues through various tests, such as the two-point correlation function, the percolation analysis and the multiplicity function. We study the filamentary properties using the Minimal Spanning Tree technique and the void distribution through the Nearest Neighbour Statistics and the Void Probability Function. From the results of these tests we deduce that second-order differences are not present between the CfA and the UDLS catalogues, but the UDLS galaxies are more spread out along the structures, which therefore appear more filamentary. Our analysis confirms the results of the comparison between the CfA and the SSRS made by Pellegrini et al. and therefore we can outline some general properties of diameter-limited samples.
