Sharpening the measured quantum phase distribution by discarding data

J. R. Torgerson, L. Mandeļ · Optics Communications · 1997

In measurements of the phase difference between two weak coherent fields based on photon counting, it has been shown that discarding the outcomes with all-zero photon counts has the effect of sharpening the probability distribution of the phase difference. We show here that the distribution can be sharpened further by discarding even more data, such as those with fewer than two or three photon counts.
