Pattern matching algorithm using Hough planes for similar transformed images

This paper describes a method of estimation of similar transform parameters so that pattern matching of two similar edge images can be carried out. The relationship between four similar transform parameters (scale transform, rotation, and two translations) and the Hough plane is discussed. Using this relationship, a method of reducing a four-dimensional search problem to a one- or two-dimensional problem is proposed. This relationship can be applied to efficient search of the whole parameter space, and to an edge image which has a local solution. The Hough transform plane represents the structure of segments of the whole image, and this can be applied to an image from which the extraction of features is difficult. © 1998 Scripta Technica, Syst Comp Jpn, 29(13): 48–55, 1998
