On the accuracy of asymptotic expansions for power functions
Th. Pfaff, Johann Pfanzagl · Journal of Statistical Computation and Simulation · 1985
The paper investigates the numerical accuracy of approximations to power functions, obtained from asymptotic expansions. Whereas the usual expansions—obtained from Edgeworth-expansions under the hypothesis—give general insights into the structure of the power functions, numerically more accurate approximations to power functions can be obtained if the Edgeworth-expansions are applied under the alternatives. Finally, an inherent measure for the accuracy of such approximations is suggested, and its usefulness is illustrated by examples.
