Analysis and synthesis of the EMG fine structure of lip muscles during speech

Harry S. Cooker, B. J. Cary · The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America · 1975

Electromyographic activity from muscles involved in the elevation and depression of the lower lip was monitored through the use of concentric needle electrodes during the production of syllables initiated with bilabial stop-plosives. Lower-lip displacement and vocal output were monitored concurrently with the electromyography, and all data were recorded on an FM tape recorder. Selected segments of the data were computer-processed by means of a time domain analysis strategy utilizing Hanning Cosine Modulated (HCM) wave functions. Examination of HCM parameters for different muscles at different production rates was conducted to assess the effect of changing velocity on the EMG signal, By using an algorithm based on the derived HCM parameters, it was possible to synthesize rather precisely the EMG fine structure associated with a particular muscle at a particular production rate. The original and synthesized EMG signals are presented for comparison, and the effects of HCM parameter manipulation on the synthesized fine structure are demonstrated.
