Diagnosis as a notion of grammar

This paper will sketch an approach to natural language parsing based on a new conception of what makes up a recognition grammar for syntactic analysis and how such a grammar should be structured. This theory of syntactic analysis formalizes a notion very much like the psychologist's notion of "perceptual strategies " [Bever "70] and makes this formalized notion- which will be called the notion of wait-and-see diagnostics- a central and integral part of a theory of what one knows about the structure of language.
