A system of notation for electro‐acoustic music: A proposition

Louise Gariépy, Jean Décarie · Interface · 1984

Electro‐acoustic music arose at a time when the notion of musical notation itself was the subject of profound questioning. Different forms of score were written for this new music, most of them using notation created “ad hoc”. The authors propose a notation system intended to produce “prescriptive” scores. Its main characteristics are: that it is based upon a thorough analysis of the “technical gesture”; that each symbol results from rules that allow easy integration of new symbols; that the lay‐out of the score makes “reading at sight” easier by showing clearly the function of each element of a technical device and the flow of the audio signal. This research was initiated in a pedagogical context. But it provides us with a tool that should become useful to the musicologists as well as to composers.
