After fifteen years of struggling with difficult to use, expensive and unreliable equipment, we now have the wherewithal to help large numbers of users augment their intellectual capability. The major problem with reacting to cries of falling enrollments and limited resources for education in general and computing in particular is that it is likely to be a self-fulfilling prophecy. The zero-sum game nature of the next decade means that gains in education and computing must be the result of reallocation of resources. This shifting of resources will only take place if we demonstrate the value of computing to the community by actually helping instructors, researchers, students and administrators increase their productivity. If users services doesn't do this, who will?
