The characteristics occurring at the interface between porous calcium- phosphate ceramics and new-formed bone after implanted in muscle site was observed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) with x-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). The TEM micrograph showed that Ca-P ceramic surface became vague after being implanted and the fine acicular crystals, which were less than 100 nm in length formed on the Ca-P ceramic surface. It was observed that the direct mineralization appeared on the surface of porous HA/TCP ceramics after being implanted in the muscle of animal through SEM and TEM.
