A low-cost system is developed which can provide a cheap intention transmission system by gaze (character input and environment control devices by gaze) for persons with severe limb disability. There is a highly accurate commercial gaze detection device with sophisticated functions, using an image processing board. However, if such a device is used it is difficult to limit costs and the system cannot be made practical. In this study, the system cost is reduced by using software processing of a captured video image to detect the gaze. Owing to recent advances in PC performance, a notebook PC can be used, which helps to reduce the scale of the system. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
