An instructive blunder in electromagnetism

G C Scorgie · European Journal of Physics · 1995

A false argument relating to the interaction between current carrying elements proves useful in revealing the role of displacement current. Leathem's phenomenon (1913) is rediscovered and provides the key to understanding the apparent violation of Newton's third law in the context of the interaction between two current elements, one open and the other closed.
