Power Consumption Analysis of a Bluetooth over Ultra Wide Band System

Alexandre Lewicki, J. del Prado Pavon, Jo Degraef, Jacky Talayssat, Gilles Jacquemod · 2007

Bluetooth (BT) is a Wireless Personal Area Networks (WPAN) technology that is becoming increasingly popular for low power, low data rate and short distance applications. The WiMedia Alliance specifies an Ultra Wide Band (UWB) standard that defines high data rate communications of up to 480 Mbps, within a range up to 10 meters. The industry is now merging these two technologies into one single specification in order to get the best out of them. On one side the low power consumption and usability of the BT solutions, on the other side the high data rate provided by UWB. The aim of this paper is to provide a power consumption analysis of the low power modes of both standards and an energy efficiency comparison for the different modes of operation.
