Change of Scale for the Full Permeability Tensor on a Tetrahedron Grid

Rune A. Madsen · 1994

We present a method for upscaling the full permeability tensor based on finite element methods on tetrahedron grids. The upscaling procedure is based on the principle that the energy loss due to friction shall remain the same in the upscaled system as in the original system. This gives a mathematically unique method for upscaling that in principle may be used on reservoirs of any type of heterogeneity in the permeability. The method is implemented on a computer and numerical results will be presented.
