Accountability of Centralized Payment Systems: Formal Reasoning, Protocol Design and Analysis

AbstractAccountability is one of the most critical security properties of electronic payment protocols. It can be used to resolve disputes among involved parties. Several formal logics were proposed for reasoning about the accountability of payment protocols. However, they are not able to efficiently analyze centralized payment protocols. In this paper, we propose a general model for payment transactions in centralized environments. We then introduce BPAC, a bill payment ensuring accountability based on symmetric cryptography, which satisfies the proposed model. Moreover, we propose an extension of existing accountability logics which is capable of reasoning about transaction securities in centralized payment transactions. Our formal analysis shows that BPAC satisfies the accountability property.
