This article addresses the benefits of the cognitive viewpoint for the information retrieval systems evaluation. Even if cognitive sciences gave new opportunities regarding the restriction of the “match paradigm”, they present some methodological and theoriterical limitations which are presented in the first part. In the second part of the article, an extension of the cognitive viewpoint, named the holistic approach, is presented through four exemples. This approach points out a new challenge which is not only to improve the systems performance but to give an overall understanding model of the interaction between the user and the information process.
