Healthcare-inspired cognitive radio

R.S.H. Istepanian, Nada Y. Philip · 2009

Cognitive radio systems is considered as one of the major evolving areas in future wireless communications systems and are expected to enable the introduction of seamless and ubiquitous services in different applications. One of the key applications will be in the mobile healthcare domain. In this paper we present the concept of healthcare inspired cognitive radio systems that describes the potential application of cognitive radio in bandwidth demanding m-health applications. In particular, we consider here the remote ultrasound streaming from roaming ambulance vehicle to remote physician or medical expert. In this paper we focus on describing the concept of using cognitive radio technique to detect either WiMAX or 3G/3.5G cellular wireless network for ultrasound streaming application and future challenges in the design of such system.
