Observation of the Motion of the Tongue in a Reed Organ Pipe
David Robbins · The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America · 1969
An 8-ft tuba reed organ pipe was instrumented for the purpose of studying the motion of the tongue. A foil strain gauge was mounted on the tongue to monitor the dynamic bending strain. The strain trace was monitored photographically from an oscilloscope trace. Stroboscopic movies of the tongue motion were taken using the slip-synchronization method. A parametric study of the effect of adjusting the tuning wire was carried out. It was observed both photographically and oscillographically that the tongue actually contacted the reed twice during a short portion of the period of oscillation.
