Radiometric nomenclatures and spatial resolutions

Marcel Raffy, Denis Blamont · International Journal of Remote Sensing · 2003

The use of remotely sensed multispectral images in the process of cartography is a current operation, for example, in geographical information systems (GIS). A nomenclature is attached to any cartography. The present paper approaches the problem of the rules a nomenclature must follow when the resolution of the images is coarser. We distinguish and define the morpho-structural and radiometric nomenclatures and study the second type. We show that, in the case of a coarser resolution, the original nomenclature is no longer valid, in the sense that the low resolution pixels may have a name which does not relate to their content. We present the principles to follow for the definition of a low-resolution nomenclature. An algorithm is given and illustrated by an example of a Nepalese map based on a two-channel SPOT image. We propose additional information on the content of low resolution pixels and a quality index for the low resolution nomenclature.
