Pitch, Intensity, and Spectrum Stereotypes in Vocoder-Analysis Data for Readings of Phonetically Balanced Wordlists

Caldwell P. Smith · The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America · 1963

An 18-channel vocoder system using a conventional pitch extractor was used to analyze intelligibility-test recordings consisting of talkers reading Harvard PB wordlists in the carrier sentence “You will write (test word) now.” Digital-output data from the analyzer were segmented to separate the test-word items from the carrier sentences. Distributions of the fundamental pitch frequency, intensity level, and spectrum data were compiled for the segments and analyzed to permit a comparison of the test-word items and the carrier sentences, and with data from connected-speech samples from the same talkers.
