Cracking the code: The history of Gpcode

The infamous Gpcode virus was first encountered in Russia in December 2004 when we started getting reports from people that their files had been encrypted and they couldn't establish which program had been used to encrypt them. The program turned out to be Gpcode. The only trace it would leave behind, apart from encrypted files, was a text file called !_Vnimanie_!.txt (‘vnimanie’ is the Russian word for ‘attention’) indicating the virus's Russian origin.
