With the spread of new video services such as teletext, captain and also DBS broadcasting, and with the pervasion of video package equipment like VCRs and optical video disc players, a TV receiver not only accepts on-air broadcasting programs but also is expected to work as a display monitor. A TV receiver as a monitor must necessarily be equipped with the improved picture quality within the current TV standards. Though the existing TV standard (NTSC) is highly sophisticated, its interlaced scanning, however, yields a poor result in terms of the vertical resolution. Especially, in case of a large size screen, the scanning line structure and the line flicker degrade the vertical resolution and sharpness significantly. In order to solve this problem, we have developed a practical intra-field adaptive line interpolating system with a small capacity of field memory and also designed a vertical contour compensation filter. In addition, by using the field memory in common, we have introduced a new function of "picture and still picture" with no cost increase.
