The input of user‐defined functions during execution of a CAL program

A key feature of the teaching packages designed and developed at the University of Kent at Canterbury is the method of handling user‐defined functions during program execution. Complicated functions of one or more variables are catered for in a way that allows direct input during program execution. The Kent approach overcomes the inefficiency of the interpretive implementation by generating compiled code and linking it in a manner transparent to the user. This process gives the efficiency of executable code and enables the response time to be kept low even for stages, such as graphical representation of functions, which require very many function calls.
