Intelligent information retrieval and fault classification in distribution substations using a rough set approach

In today's information age, raw data must be transferred into knowledge. Processor based protection and control relays, often referred to as intelligent electronic devices (IEDs), collect and store huge amounts of data, but most of it remains in a raw, primitive form, which is never analysed or used. Knowledge extraction systems are needed to interpret the data acquired by IEDs and convert it into a form that benefits the network operator or the maintenance team. This paper describes a computational intelligence technique, referred to as rough set, that extracts useful information from raw data and present it in a summary form, that is easy to interpret, nonconflicting and unambiguous.
