Developing a software core for computing centers
William E. Mhalo · ACM SIGUCCS Newsletter · 1986
The transient nature of the user community at a university computing center and the availability of software across different machines suggest the need for developing software core standards. These standards (or recommendations) could be followed by other universities across the country. Software that meets these standards should be machine-independent, and supported by most university computing centers. The benefit of establishing such a standard is a reduction in training when users move from one university to another. This paper will survey the software characteristics at some university computing centers and identify software common to these institutions. The paper will conclude by making some suggestions for developing a software core that can be followed by university computing centers.
