Asymmetric model for active measurements in the internet

John William Atwood, Jae-U Im, Younchan Jung · 2008

We introduce a methodology to quantify the level of asymmetry on communication paths, which is inevitable in Internet active measurements. It is measured while the active host and the measured host are synchronized to the same real time. A new model is proposed for the reliable estimate of the accuracy of the one-way delay from general active measurements. The asymmetric model can predict the level of asymmetry in active measurements using only round trip times measured even though two hosts are not synchronized.
