Some considerations on intelligent tutoring systems
Antonio Vantaggiato · 1988
The goals, functions and structure of Intelligent Tutoring Systems are described in this paper.A prototype is then presented: SEDAF, a tutor in elementary Calculus.Particular emphasis is given to two major problems: the diagnose of a student error, and the interpretation and modeling of his knowledge. The former will introduce a discussion on the Misknowledge Base, the latter on the Student Model. This paper discusses some aspects of the general architecture of an ITS, examining its functions, its implementation philosophy and the knowledge model on which it is based. For this purpose we will be referring to an ITS prototype for the analysis of mathematical functions: SEDAF (Sistema Esperto per la Didattica dell'Analisi di Funzioni = Didactic Expert System for the Analysis of functions), which was developed as a thesis at the Department of Computer and Systems Sciences of the University of Rome, by Agostino Grilletta and the author (9), (13).According to the most widespread idea, an ITS is made of four different knowledge bases (3),( 14):
