The Cronus distributed operating system
Stephen T. Vinter, Richard E. Schantz · 1986
The need for distributed applications is driven by the limitations of centralised computer systems, desires for specialised architectures and survivability, and the need to interconnect existing machines and applications. The Cronus Distributed Operating System, being developed by BBN Laboratories, was conceived to support applications' use of diverse resources in a heterogeneous, internetwork environment. The overall goals of the effort are to exploit the potential for parallelism and redundancy inherent in this environment, reduce the effort in designing and implementing complex distributed applications, and make the integration of existing functionally specialiJed hardware and software resources into the system feuible. We believe these goals are best addressed by providing a comprehensive system architecture, a set of basic system services, and an appropriate software development environment.
